TV advert - final feedback

Scott, some good work produced here and within your group, you have created an effective re-branding adverting concept and a well-produced TV advert.

In regards to unit 2 - Communication Skills for Creative Media Production (pitch and presentation):
You were able to use appropriate techniques to extract information from written sources with some precision and presented a media production report which conveys relevant information.
Your pitch was interesting and I thought that you conveyed the information about your re-branding idea and employed forms of address in your pitch to communicate ideas. The pitch was good and you deployed and managed technology to pitch a media production proposal.
Some changes were made based on initial feedback with occasional beneficial effects.

In regards to unit 30: Advertisement Production for Television:
Currently you have not yet submitted your TV advert analysis to your blog and this needs to be addressed ASAP.
Working within your group, you were able originate and develop an idea for a TV advertisement showing some imagination and with only occasional assistance. The advert demonstrated a good understanding of conventions in TV adverts and it was clear that you were able to produce a TV advertisement to a good standard showing some imagination and with only occasional assistance.
Your evaluation was also good and you were able to comment on your own TV advertisement production work with some appropriate use of subject terminology.

Documentary Mini-Task


A documentary is a genre of movie/TV making that shows the viewer a particular story, viewpoint, message or experience, documentary’s typically use video & film scenes, photographs and/or sound of real people and real events. I would define a documentary as a film that shows you precisely a part of life that you wouldn’t particularly think about or a story that dates back in the 1800, you can make a documentary from any topic you can think of, I also think that you will always learn something new from a documentary whatever the topic is. Documents can come in five different types which are expository, observational, interactive, reflexive and performative which we will talk more about later in this document.

Expository documentaries expose a topic which is given by the name expository, they typically use a commentator to talk over the images and videos specifically to the audience, questions, facts and opinions, this gives you the insight of the topic you are watching. I watched an expository documentary with the class called ‘we are the Lambeth Boys’ which follows a group of members from the Alford House Youth club in London where you follow them about during their time at the youth club and after when they go to work. It was interesting to watch and see what the youths did in London in the 1950’s.

Observational documentaries observe events that happen around us typically using hand held cameras with no interviews or voice over during the documentary also a lot of long takes are used to capture the scene. High School which is an observation documentary that looks into the lives of the 60’s teens in an American high school, in this documentary you look at the different aspects of the high school when you get to be inside the office where they deal with bad behavior in and outside of the class room or you are in side some of the class room where you get to see the students being taught English, people using typewrites and at the sports hall where you see the girls doing their sports lesson. In this documentary you see a lot of the long takes in this documentary which gets a bit boring especially with no voice over but It was nice to see what it was like in a 1960’s school and how it is different to the British high schools we have now. 

Interactive documentaries typically have the filmmakers participate in the documentary, watching the presenter interview people about the topic, questions and all this together to back up the opinions of the presenter which can be biased sometimes as the documentary can be edited in the favor of the presenter. I watched an interactive documentary with my class called Louis and the Nazis which the presenter of the documentary called Lousi Theroux travels to America to talk to one of the most racist people in America called Tom Metzger and going to skinhead rallies where he interviews the people about why they are racist and why do they do it. I really like this interactive documentary as Louis in never scared to ask questions that people may not like which you get to see tensions rise between the presenter and the interviewees.

Reflexive documentaries attempts to show off the conventions of documentary to the audience typically using shots that capture life using different shot types. I found this the hardest to watch as it is such a dull and boring documentary. We watched a reflexive documentary called powaqquatsi in lesson which looked at the everyday life of the public in a third world county, it looks more of the detail of the film where the mise en-scene is very important.

Performative documentaries usually use re-enactments to give a better idea of the story, uses exaggeration in camera positions and soundtracks to bring the audience into the story a bit more, it is a more professional documentary with a lot of murder case’s becoming a more famous topic for the performative documentaries. One that I watched on Netflix called ‘Making a murder’ really shows the typical conventions of a performative documentary using re-enactments and a lot of interviews with people on the case. Using re-enactment is very well know and it very good in performative as you get to see what everyone that witnessed the murder and sometimes you feel like you were there at the murder scene which really immerses you into the documentary.


If you are doing an interactive documentary where you are trying to go against a topic like racism or any type of discrimination you would want to use accurate and factual information as you want the viewer to be on your side but sometimes if you use facts some people still will decide what they want at the end of the documentary. I think documentaries should just put a message out and at the end of the documentary the view will just make his mind at the end, but the unfair editing in interactive documentaries can be biased on the presenter’s side changing the view of the viewer.

3 Minute Wonder reviews

Karl Pilkington - LifeI liked this documentary as it's really funny as it's by Karl Pilkington who i have watched before on a TV show where he travels the world, i also like the way it's filmed where you don't hear the camera men or anyone ask him questions it's just him talking about what he thinks. 

Last Supper
I found this 3 minute wonder interesting as you get to see someones opinion on the last up per which is what your last meal is before you are killed by the death 
penalty, it also tells you at the end what he done to get into prison and what he had for his last meal.

144 Magnesium Square
This documentary talks about a piece of modern art  and you see a bunch of peoples opinions about the piece which to me is just tiles on a floor that you would see in a kitchen and it really is fascinating to see that people think that its art as its really just someone putting tiles together and they try to find the art in it.

Evaluation


Section 1. The brief
For this assignment we were told to rebrand a product from the company Unilever which is a multinational consumer goods company. The product we rebranded was Sure the very famous deodorant brand for men and women, offering a collection of antiperspirants and deodorants that last up to 48 hours. We decided to choose Sure as our rebranding product as we thought it would be easier to make an advert with a deodorant can then an ice-cream product like magnum or ben and Jerrys. The current target audience for Sure is males and females aged from 20+ which is shown in their own adverts, the new target audience we are aiming for with the rebrand is teenagers in high school doing sports, we have chosen this new target audience as a lot of teens around the world do sports like football and athletics and they need an antiperspirant.
Section 2. The Finished product and feedback
To collect feedback on my finished advert I created an 8 question questionnaire which they answered and can see the results on the PowerPoint book or responses. What I got from the responses is that some people thought that the advert reached the target audience but some thought I missed it, the people that said I missed the target audience said that I should have used a younger actor for the advert and made it a bit longer to strengthen the story line. The people that did think I reached the target audience was because of the where we shot the scenes which was in a school changing room which gave them the idea that this was for teens and one answer was that the actors did look young which fit the target audience for them. All the people knew what we were trying to sell in the advert and they said they would all buy the product if they could. I would say that we missed the target audience as we don’t really specify it is for teens in the advert. Our tag line at the end was the persuasion technique which was supposed to get the viewer interested in buy the product as it makes you a better sportsman when you use it. The message we were trying to send in the advert is that this new sports deodorant by sure would make you better sportsman when you use it creating a new sports range for people to use. I would say our advert did look professional with the camera angles and the editing but I don’t think the text that was used at the end was very good and would change it to a more professional advert standard
Section 3. Personal reflection
The final advert we made was a bit different to what we planned for in the pre-production stage, for instance some of the scene’s we had in the shot list were not in the finale advert and we didn’t know if we wanted to have music running in the background which we did at the end add.

I am happy with the final version of the advert, the only thing I would change is to add a couple more scenes into the advert to make the narrative more fluent, I would also change the actors as there acting wasn’t so good, maybe have teens be the actors as I feel that the target audience want very easy to see. During the project I done most of the pre-production work and in the making of the advert I was one of the actors.
